Knight In Shining Armor? One Word: Terrible

Post by Kevin Knight » Thu Sep 18, 2008 9:08 am

I have just finished watching episode 1 of Knight Rider 2008. For years now, I have been far away from the KR online world after the destruction of KnightRegistries.com. First, hats off to NBC for allowing the episode to be available at places like iTunes for free download in standard res and HD, without commercials. Also for wanting to revitalize one of the few wholesome, hour-long, action franchises, which allowed the network to pay the Seinfeld and Friends casts their outrageous salaries for so many years. Your giving it a go! Would I expect the series to be successful with David now? No, but I wouldn't have minded seeing a go at it, as a better transistion. David the actor, and his character, and that Trans-Am as K.I.T.T. are like 3PO and R2-D2. The kind of team you cannot bare to see one without the other. We are in 2008, so sure go with another car manufacturer. The Mustang. OK fine I'll let that one go. It's not sleek, it's muscle. It' not brains, it's brawn. Can let it go. So what is the problem?

First lets take a journey to February with the FBI Agent Carrie Rivai character. Don't ask, don't tell? It did actually nothing for the character or the storyline to reveal that she was a lesbian. With a lack of maturity. To be engaging in a one night stand? Not only at her age, but as an FBI agent?! It is moments like this throughout the inital pilot and Episode 1 that have me constantly outloud asking the television; "What the hell?!" The Knight In Shining Armor episode had me constantly yelling,"Are you F@#$%^& kidding me?" You don't really expect the viewers to believe this do you?!

Guys, kudos! You gave it a shot. But you have some serious re-imagineering to do if you want it to be successful. There are very few people in the Knight Rider community that can honestly convey and communicate the reasons, and feelings invoked, as to why the original series worked. These people are difficult to find through all the moaning and complaining that it isn't David, or a Trans Am, or this part of the dash. Yada yada. I will say that in my opinion, the only thing the producers got right was the scanner sound effect. Unmistakable. But that's a nod to us old timers. Which makes me sound like I want the old series back. No, that's just how far off everything else was. The CGI HAS TO GO! Completely 100% no CGI. I think my first ,"Are you F@#$%^& kidding me?" or RUFKM? moment was this K.I.3.T. transformation to Attack mode (which I had seen online previously) It looked terrible. Remember: "Just because you can do a thing, doesn't mean you must do a thing" Fenders flipping arround?! Really? Really?! Definetely "More Than Meets The Eye." The headlight and tailight covers, AWSOME look guys. I can even understanding the need for the rear wing. But aerodynamics, that wing being so high up is not helping keep the rear of the car down. Was the really a need for racing slicks? Super advanced huh? K.I.T.T. was able do 377MPH on Goodyear Eagle GT 15's. A shape shifting CS Shelby logo to Cobra emblem in a show based around the name KNIGHT? RUFKM?! Let's revise this whole Attack Mode. "Preservation of human life." No attacking! For fears of being quite long winded, I'm gonna start with the broad strokes. The CGI just looks terrible guys, absolutely terrible. We don't need to see the engine internals, or "how" turbo boost works. The salad shooters on the hood? "Just because you can do a thing... " That's what you call a turbo boost? WAIT?! A KR light up logo on the bottom of the car?! RUFKM?! Bring back a land based transport. Getting off the C-4 looked terrible, and was just as bad when used in Team Knight Rider. Thank you for the expertly performed reverse 180's.

Val Kilmer gave a great performance, and I actually hate his acting. Sounds good though. The KI3T cave? Get rid of it. It really doesn't add anything but 0's to your budget. I guess one man no longer can make a difference. It take a team of 30 to do one man's job nowadays. Mico-management anyone? You need to actually place cameras on the outside of an actual vehicle. These green/blue screen driving sequences take away from the realism when you want our attention to be on dialogue. Lastly, and most importantly. MOST importantly. Drop this "transforming program." Please!? I watched the first 7:45 praying that is was a dream sequence or a simulation of some sort. You had us almost OK with the color changing nano-technology of the pilot. We could see how it could be usefull in writing. To end on an up note. Kudos to your editors and director of photography. The opening sequence was great, just great. " Deanna Russo is an attractive woman, but her acting.... was great. Very impressed. I hope you give her the respect in storylines of an intelligent woman that very rarely, if ever, has to use her looks. She pulls it off famously and leaves soap-opera-buff boy in the acting dust. You might just have a breakout star on your hands with ONLY her! Additionally good acting out of the chancters Zoey and Billy. Lastly boys, you best have some REAL tricks up your collective sleeves because you pulled up to the starting line and I'm afraid you'll be caught in the dust and all you'll remember seeing is a sleek, black t-top, and the words CALIFORNIA KNIGHT.

With Respect,

I'm going to agree that there were too many introductions. Let's take a look at the transformations: KITT in attack mode was probably seen on screen for maybe even a minute. It was ridiculous to show off to the viewers that he can turn into a pickup right away.

I felt they also crammed the story line in the pilot and the premiere. KNOCK IT OFF! This is like listening to a person speak with a scrambled mind. All this information to swallow is just not good for 42 minutes. The story yesterday was good, but there was too much to tell. Let me bring up another example to point at: Mike and KITT leave the plane after Mike was told by Carrie his identity as Mike Traceur is no more. KITT demands to know where Mike is racing off to, and no more than twenty-five seconds later (with the same music playing), he ends up back at the KITT cave where he find Carrie playing basketball. This point right here should tell everyone that they crammed way too much inside a small alotment of time. Either that, or they have piss poor editors working on this series.

The green screen car sequences suck. I don't like the look of it. PERIOD.

Completely agree. As I said in an earlier post:

-The directing and pace of the story were far better in the pilot. In the premiere there was far too many cut scenes, unneccesary zoom ins and too much music attached to the scenes. The directing was horrid. A great director can always take a bad script and turn it into gold. There was a good script here but it was ruined by the directing.

-Too many sexual innuendos. I get it, the writers love sex. I dont need to see it mentioned or hinted at every 5 seconds. (Sarah stripping in the car, Billy loves porn, mystery women dressed like a slut, Sarah caught by Mike half naked)

-So Agent Ravai appears in the subway station and shoots Michael. Tells him in the plane that he's "dead". Michael leaves the plane with KITT and heads back to the cave and there she is playing basketball with Zoe and Billy......what? It all happened so fast. They could have split the premiere into 2 episodes or made it a 2 hour premiere. Again, the directing and editing just plain stunk.

After watching the pilot I was thrilled. I couldnt wait to see how they improved upon it and whether or not they would bring back things like turbo boost. I'm hoping that they are still working on this epeisode over the next week and that this early premiere was more like a rough draft. I hope I see a better version of this episode next week because in my opinion, if this is what they will present as the new Knight Rider I dont think this show will last a season......

Hopefully if we wait the series will have time to fill some of our gaps, like mine being about FLAG and where everyone went and some nods to the original as well. Now we just may have to be patient and see what happens.

Heh, if they can wait. They may want to tell us everything in the next eight episodes.

There should be a name for the style of story telling we were exposed to with the premiere. Something along the lines of binging..

First off I find your review to be even less mature. As a long time Knight Rider fan I've had to sit through NBC's Horrible 2000 movie. Action Packs 2010 movie, and TEAM KNIGHT RIDER. The tele-movie and this episode where LIGHT YEARS ABOVE those incarnations of Knight Rider. Here you are knit picking about the Attack Mode, which Knight Rider has already done with the Originals Super Pursuit mode. Realistically do you think the Original Kit could have kept all that crap tucked away in him and still had a trunk and an engine powerfull enough to do the speeds he was doing? Give me a break. Yes we had a woman who is a lesbian and having a one night stand and she's an FBI Agent in the movie, SO WHAT. How many one night stands have you had in your life. People are like that. I'm not looking for Morality in Knight Rider and if you are you have to seriously rethink where you get your morality lessons from.

Secondly If you had been actually paying attention to the story from both the movie and the preimer the Transformation program works with the nano-technology. I agree with you that Sarah is the breakout star of this series though. I think you're forgetting that the biggest factor in KR was the oh wow that's cool factor. I really enjoyed this episode as it is some of the best writting we've gotten in the Knight Rider franchise in some time. Could it be improved sure, but the Original Knight Rider also had weak points. The original was a cheesy romp into the life of a man who had been removed from his orginal life. He was a womanizer, always hitting on the female guest of the week. Who had to rely on Devon, and Bonnie for support so while the catch-phrase was one man can make a differance there were really three people working together. Another weak point was the fact that the car ALWAYS used turbo-boost to save the day, and while a cool concept it got old quickly, hence the storyline where KITT loses his protective coating and has to be rebuilt with a super pursiut mode (Flagging ratings cause them to initiate this gimmick)

Finally , it may be nice to look at the old series with wistful nostalgia, and in truth it was one of the best series on Tv for it's time. Paired with the A-team it held Friday nights hostage for a long time, but it was not the end all and be all of story telling. The episodes were formulaic and the writing was aimed at the younger crowd. This series is doing what tv does today in the world where the younger crowd is on the X-box playing Halo, GTA, or the latest multi-player game. The audiance they have to try and reach is different now, and I for one expecting what I did throughly enjoyed this episode. Of course I wasn't expecting the orginal show just warmed back up and served again. But hey that's just my opinion.

I also found the playfull banter between Billy the MW to be the normal everyday banter that would happen between the office flirt who's found someone he/she can make fun of and tease a know that nothing is actually going to happen. Maybe you need to take a look at your view of sex because the rest of the world is maturing and leaving you behind while some still act like five year olds with EW SEX is Icky.

Dude, the original show is from the '80's. To keep peoples attention these days, it has to be bigger, badder and louder. I get what you're saying, but if you don't believe me, look at what kids are into these days. Far cry from what made us excited when we were growing up. The show needs to be successful, Knight Rider OG"s like us will take whatever we get, because we fiend for it, but the noobs are going to want what's hot RIGHT NOW, and that's where all these half naked chicks and transforming KITT comes in.

You really think a show about a guy driving around in the most high tech car in the world saving farms and quaint little towns from motorcycle bandits is going to cut it these days? Come on now!

Take it with a grain of salt, be thankful that Knight Rider is back on air, stop dissecting EVERY LITTLE DETAIL and just enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts. Yes, this is a forum to discuss the show and whatnot, but I see more and more fans of the original dissect every single nook and cranny and just not let go, it's getting repetitive.

I think you guys are right and wrong. Yea, there was just a lot of "ugh, ok" parts....but it is a new day 'n' age. I think if they keep the transformations down to a minimum, we'll learn to appreciate them....Honestly I think that all of it in the new episode was cool. I still do not like the plasma ball thing on the dash. Should have kept with the screen. Anyway, I think the new episode was ok. I found it entertaining. I also think it will get better as the series continues. So guys just chill out and see how it starts to flow, i think you guys will learn to enjoy it...

I agree about giving this show a chance. The original show was geared more towards the audience of the 80's and vice versa for this reincarnation. I do agree they should back off on the sexual references but sadly most TV shows today incorporate it in some way. Renaming him to MK though makes me wonder if some of Hoff's former enemies from the original will return in some way thinking it's him or getting revenge on the Foundation. There are lots of ways this series can take and it could really work if done correctly.

You did see the part where they were roasting to death in the car. The stripping wasn't sexual it was a means of keeping cool. Nudity is NOT EBIL. The United states is the ONLY western country that has this hang up. Wow. Your view is quite warped. Immaturity is connected to people who will watch a show just cause theres girls in bikinis in it or hot girls prancing around that have nothing to do with the story. And I saw a lot of that here. I saw it in the 2 houor pilot as well but at least the rest of it was good. Here you had tons of action thrown at you in a fast paced way, with no organization and then showing half naked chicks or spitting out sexual innuendos every chance they had. It was ridiculous.

Dude I have nothing against sex so dont even take the debate in that direction. If you want to show Russo in a bikini or make her look sexy then fine. But to write into the script a situation (like KITT on fire) as an excuse to show Russo in her bra and panties, or purposely make the female villain wear the outfit that she wore for no reason other than to get an extra spike in the ratings is CHEAP. It's a cheap fix. Instead of going for ratings with intelligent writing, you have to go low and thats true immaturity. A show will not last long with this kind of writing as opposed to a more thought out script.

Heck, put a pair of boobs in front of me anyday and I'll be happy. But it's as if these writers are thinking, "lets put a hot chick in every scene, lets write in excuses for girls to be half naked, bring back turbo boost and these fools will be suckered in". The world is maturing around me? More like the world is being dumbed down if scripts like these gain ratings.

You guys like the car roasting scene? Mike and Sarah looked pretty Effing casual while stripping down, and meanwhile, the internal heat is climbing up past 128 degrees, and Mike's hair gel isn't even melting down his face. Perhaps a heat resistant pomade created by Knight Research??

Hey, I still only seen the episode once. We shouldn't have to REWATCH it over and over to let our taste buds get used to this awful flavor, people. COME ON!

[What in the same kind of stuff we used to see the women in the orginal show wear? Like I said Nit Picking because it's not OKR] It's a cheap fix.

Really I didn't notice it. I saw the scenes I talked about. I saw the playful banter between a sexualy liberated female co-worker and the virginal guy she like to tease. I saw two people who used to do more than SEE each other naked being comfortable around each other. I didn't see anywhere where the sex was thrown at you and put in your face. there wasn't a point where they had the women in something that wasn't approprate for the scene. In other words things I'm used to seeing every day in my life where i hear the comments the women at work make to guys, the banter that goes on between co-workers. I saw a snapshot of how people actually act around each other But I guess everyone I know is a sex crazed maniac then. Bottom line you are sweating the little *?$#....

Hey, I still only seen the episode once. We shouldn't have to REWATCH it over and over to let our taste buds get used to this awful flavor, people. COME ON!

truthfully they needed to add some fake sweat, but you know seeing a sweating girl in her bra and panties would be using sex in a cheap way to spike the ratings.

You did see the part where they were roasting to death in the car. The stripping wasn't sexual it was a means of keeping cool. Nudity is NOT EVIL. The United states is the ONLY western country that has this hang up. Oh and if you notice her lines when Mike comes in on her putting on a new shirt "you've seen it all anyway" Basically these two used to go out. That kind of closeness is something I'd expect from people who used to go out. I actually found that writing mature.

I completely agree with you there. And as far as the car roasting scene, yea they were a little too casual, but as the screen inside the "cave" said, the interior temperature of the car was only 98 degrees. So, i don't mind them being so casual in 98 degree heat, its not that big of a deal....and to explain them passing out, the heat was steadily rising. And remember people....its a tv show....its for entertainment. If you don't want to let yourselves be entertained by it, then...well....be a cop and go do the real thing yourselves.

You know I'm starting to feel like I'm discussing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.. It's like the exact same rose colored arguments for why Bay is raping childhoods. Why do fans do this to themselves. From what I've seen of the New Knight Rider, this is the best incarnation we've gotten in a long while. Yet the "True Fans" Want it to be a carbon copy of the original, or the people who forget that the OLD SHOW DID THE SAME THINGS> Let's dress a girl up hot for no reason HAPPENED IN THE OLD SHOW TOO....

Did you even WATCH the old show?

Like Darkelaw just got done saying, the old KR put chicks in there and dressed them up hot for 0 purpose other than "she's hot." By today's standards, yes, they're conservative... but not back then. Back then that was like showing what we got in the premiere, if not more.

And you're going to nitpick about logos and a visual explanation of turboboost? RUFKM?!?!?

I'll give you the CG argument, to a point. There was a LOT more CG than I'm sure you picked up on (I do this stuff for a hobby, so I'm a bit nitpicky and can tell most times when there's a CG shot versus an actual shot). Aside from the transformations, it was fine. And even then, it was mostly an issue with coloring. The camera tracking and animations themselves were pretty good.

And for those who want a carbon copy of the original, you'd then sit there and complain it's a carbon copy. There's no pleasing you. I wouldn't stand up for a show if it's junk. Is this show redefining story telling and TV as we know it? Nope, but show me a show that does. It's entertaining, however, and I'll take it with no problems.

Two words to people who rants about the new Knight Rider

SHUT UP!!!!!

I am sicks of people want the new Knight Rider like to be TOS, or moans about too much "sexual" every 30 seconds, this is 21th century, we don't care about that stupid things like too much sexual hints or swearing, etc anymore.

If you don't enjoy it, then watch the reruns of TOS on your dvd and pretend that you never see the new series.

I yet see the Knight Rider 1x01 but i really want to see it because i heard many positive about it. I did saw the pilot movie back in feb, Guess what, i actually like it and want to see more.

Knight Rider will get better in later when the writer know what to write a story that everyone will enjoy it or give more better explain of what happen to FLAG after the TOS end.

I bet you don't complaint about Sex in The city cause it is revolve around sex.

Keep the great work on the new series, i trust Producer and the guys behind KR will do a good jobs and give good entertainment.

I give the New Knight Rider series 5 stars since- I say they did a decent job on the episode and it will just get better. I like the KITT cave - instead of KITT being parked out in the parking lot at F.L.A.G since in the orginial series when KARR breaks through the fence and Michael asks KITT where he is and says I'm in you parking space.

We still do not know with F.L.A.G headquarters still exist yet the mason in the orginial series. Because if that dose not exsit anymore that is they they have the SSC or KITT Cave, and they probally also will have truck later on in the series

To me this series seems more like a Movie compared to to the orginial version since in the orgnial series the episodes started out slow, then like the last 30 min. the show pick up the pace.

To me this first episode almost is similar to the Knight Of the Phoenix, but Michael Long(Knight) did not have KITT yet yet

GST is going to explain FLAG and the others from the original, hopefully by the next episode or two because I am very curious in that area.

Also this first episode is very similar ti KOTP because GST stated he went back, saw the first season, and what really got his attention was starting a new life and identity like Michael Long, so he tried to incorporate that somehow with the new.

I have faith in this show, and people need to stop being so critical and see how it progresses IMO.

Joe, I also agree with you. I have a feeling this will be a long running series.

I also have faith in them, I was surprise that Mike Tracer knew his dads really name before it got switch to Michael Knight. To me it seems like I want to call Mike Tracer (Michael Knight Jr.)

I know in the orignal series KITT could call Devon or April, Bonnie so that is like KITT not countiuesly connect to F.L.A.G headquarters, but in the new series it seems like KITT is always in connect with the SSC countiuesly.

I support the new knight rider 100%

I like the sex angles... lol I like the action... I like the actors, I'm even starting to like the mustang... What I do not like is when something looks like crap like that turbo boost. That was absolutely horrible. Maybe if they left a little more to the imigination it would've worked better for me. I thought the internal engine stuff was really cool, but the slomotion view of the car turbo boosting looked beyond fake. Fake would be an improvement.

I thought it looked better in that "ultimate car" commercial/teaser, I think the lack of showing the exhaust moving and not showing the underside of the car helped.
The new and again improved evil's advertisement is currently too long and too badass to display here. But let's just say that with now 50% more evil, this **** is great! :skar:
