Mio Knight Rider GPS

Post by neps » Tue Jun 24, 2008 12:42 am

Well the clock has struck 0 for me in the east coast, so that means I'm allowed to let the cat out of the bag. *whew*

Oh, and I have one in my hands:

I'm working on getting our preview up on the news section in these articles (please spread the links around!):

I should have the unit for a couple more days, so anything you guys want to ask that I haven't covered - ask away!

Sweet! Thanks for the review!

Neil, do you know if this will be sold in retail stores, or is this an online purchase only?

It should be available anywhere Mio GPS is carried. Their website, Amazon, Circuit City - the like.

I'm glad the cat is now out of the bag! Didn't realise until my other thread was locked!!!

I can re-post this link to Top Gear's article: http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/2980/
Which sadly says that at the moment it's US only. Though I'm sure that if it's popular enough, there's no reason it won't come over to the UK...

Me want.....

It'd be even cooler if you could integrate it into your car with a voice modulator in your steering column. :D That custom job could be expensive though...
The new and again improved evil's advertisement is currently too long and too badass to display here. But let's just say that with now 50% more evil, this **** is great! :skar:

Sue et al -

Please try to spread around the article url (http://www.knightrideronline.com/news/2 ... _voice.php) and not the YouTube url (the article has the video embeded of better quality now)

I'd rather people see the complete article vs just the clip.

Thanks!

If you guys have DIGG - please digg the review! http://digg.com/television/Knight_Rider ... r_Co_Pilot

Would be cool if people saw this device reviewed by fans vs repeating press releases elsewhere.

whet: i shall ask. I dont think there will be anything against you buying the device from amazon, and then purchasing the UK maps...

Cool! I was wondering when they'd come out with something like that. :)

BTW, my Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad T61 is named KITT and I use the Cepstral William voice for it - which sounds quite similar to (ready?) KITT! ;)

I rarely hear his voice though. I'm too busy working. :(

As for my car, (now have a 1999 Ford Taurus - see off topic thread for more info), her name is Suse. And I already have an OpenSuse install running on my Megatron machine (main server) under VMWare so I can develop my car computer system. Yup, still trying to do that. LOL!

It's bizarre. My mom and I were just talking on Saturday that they should make a GPS with William Daniels' voice. Lo and behold, here one is.

Looks pretty sweet, I really want one.
Michael: "KITT! Where are ya?!"
K.I.T.T.: "I'm in your parking space, Michael, where else would I be?"

The only thing i'm just slightly dissapointed about is that KITT's voice sounds almost like he's dying or powering down like he did in a couple episodes. Maybe it was just the way it came across in the video from having a video camera to it or whatever but I guess William Daniels is getting a little up there and i'm sure his voice has cahnged a bit.

I’ve got a youtube friend out there who noticed the same. Check out his vid.

Ah, I'm glad other people noticed this besides me. The "Where would you like to go today?" sounds like the equivalent of playing a record at a slower speed, but the actual names sound like the correct pitch. It also kind of reminds me of the Kenner Voice Car, for which Mr. Daniels also lent his voice to, which had adjustable voice speeds that affected the pitch of his voice. I hope this issue is corrected. Doesn't seem to be a big fix.

I noticed the change in Mr. Daniels' voice from way back in the AT&T commercials. It has been over 25 years since KR first aired and nobody's voice stays the same all that long. But I do say he still sounds good and still sounds like KITT. :)

Well if that's the pitch of his voice these days, I'll take the live recordings over old reused recordings from the series any day. Mr. Daniels also appears in The Graduate with Dustin Hoffman, which was made in the 1960s and his voice also sounds ever so slightly different than when he started Knight Rider. So yes, even as a full grown adult, voices are prone to still change over the years.

Wow! The modified voice sounds great. I had noticed how deep the voice was in the review. I realize that people's voices change over time... but KITT's shouldn't. :)

In fairness of Mr. Daniels - this 17+ yrs since we last heard him as KITT on a lengthy level.

Also, this is video taken from my Canon PowerShot - in my car, from a prototype unit. So you have to take into consideration the possibility of the speaker not being right, the mic not being right, and any residual noise from the ambiance.

Plus, they aren't going to be able to go into everyones cars, and make sure it sounds ok there. I don't think there is anything to fix. This is his voice people.
