80's TV will never be seen again. TV today isn't good

Post by KITT3000 » Mon Feb 18, 2008 12:38 pm

KNIGHT RIDER just proves this. All the best shows in the land came from the '80s and early '90s. There hasn't been 1 good movie, or t.v show that will leave a mark on television like the shows from the past.

Why is this?

I think 3 reasons. The generation of the '80s stopped about '95-96. Then you have the people in t.v. making shows really skipping that past generation and using the late 90s as motivation.

If you look at the youth today, and the current generation, forget about it. Your going to have flying people in movies, cheezy rap songs as theme songs, and terrible pop culture implemented in movies.

Nothing, nothing has changed in the meaning of PERFECT television, but we will never get the results because of the work that went into making proper television years ago isn't there today.

You can see it in music. People can't sing as good now. why? I think back 15 years ago, music then was so great! what happened? And I think the movie industry got cheaper and results didn't matter. They suckered the genX that this is cool music, and they bought into it. That genX continued to think that and they are the ones making that same garbage music today.

We see that in movies as well today.

If these films were put on t.v. in the '70s and '80s they wouldn't have made it through a pilot. Today they are viewed as great television, talented people!

Back to the music theory. It's amazing how the Rolling Stones are viewed as the greatest band still today. Think about it, who else is there?

Not much!

And the television industry is dying cause of the lack of quality work instead of quantity and the imagination for television has left the building!

Without imagination you have nothing! And in films today. The imagination is coming from the wrong people that's affecting the future of television.

your right. You can also say there isn't any good television anymore. It's quite clear when reruns are the biggest shows still on television.

It's not about the 80s being "better," but I do think the 80s (and 70s) were much better suited for these kinds of 80s action shows.

For instance, when watching the original KR or Chips or Magnum PI, the one thing that always jumps out at me are how damn COOL the car chases were -- and I think that's due mostly to those funky 70s beats you hear under most of them. Once TV shows let that go, and switched first to some kind of synthesized music and then rock, the car chases just didn't work anymore.

All the quick-cutting closeups probably don't help either, of course.

i think miami vice was probably the last show which gave us really good television.
plus, the synth music by jan hammer was superb in vice.

Thank god for that!

Who the hell considers the Rolling Stones the greatest band still today? Garbage music? You mean the **** that was released through out much of the 80s with the hair metal bull ****? But it sounds more like you're talking about when "Grunge" came about, were you a Loverboy Fan? People not "singing good" today or 15 years ago or whatever is all up to YOUR opinion, you sound like an old fogey who goes around saying "back in my day" followed by something they're looking at with rose tinted glasses. Guess what? Your generation's music, TV and film sucked just as much as the one before and the one before that to those of the preceding generation. Plenty of bad music was made in the 50s, 60s, 70s, especially the 80s, the 90s and this current decade. If you want to be critical of the music industry today, that's fine and I can agree but it has nothing to do with "talent" and is all marketing and commercialism there are STILL plenty of talented creative people out there making music unfortunately many of them are pushed aside for easy to market crap. There was plenty of AWFUL television made ever since television programming was introduced even when the ideas were "new". Guess what? The powers that be in the music, TV and film industries aren't products of the 90s for the most part, they're many of the same old suits who were involved in entertainment back in the 70s and 80s. If they "rose to power" in the 90s they were likely a product of the 60s or 70s, maybe the 80s.

I don't get it, you join here today with the KITT3000 name and then all you do is bitch about how much the TV movie and the car sucked.

I better stop before I get wound up.....

I agree 100% with the OP and thats why I spend most of my time watching the original Dvds of KR and Macgyver and Back to the future. I think a lot of what peeves me off about now is the action scenes are all computer graphics and not too many shows/movies actually do the stunts anymore. I want to be able to put the DVD in slow motion when the car is landing off a ramp and watch the front hood and fenders buckle from the impact and than unpause it to see a brand new undamaged car driving away. Yea it was a little cheesey but it was fun. Also the 80's telivison was more centered in a fantasy world than reality but it was a good thing. There is very few shows today that I watch because of all the reality tv shows which make me sick and sex being shoved down our throats in every video clip.

Umm, hello McFly! Your bringing up Back To the Future and then complain about sex being shoved down our throats? Did you miss the whole thing with Marty's mother having a crush on him and trying to get into her son's pants? Hell, she even took them off when he was knocked out!

I really don't see how a whole 30 seconds, probably not even that much time, qualifies as sex being "shoved down our throats". There's plenty of shows on at the same time of night that do ten times more than what was done in the TV movie. But I agree, the CGI is over used and more often than not, sucks.

There are still good shows left on tv. If you had said cartoons on tv today aren't as good I think everyone would have agreed with you on that one.

I agree with Drake, House is awesome, Doctor Who is awesome, Burn Notice is awesome, Battle Star Galactica is well done, but it's more my boyfriend's show than my own...probably because I got into it waaaaay too late. There are plenty of good shows out there still.

TV today is just fine. KR just seemed so damn good back then because I was 10! That's also why Fall Guy, A-Team, Transformers, MacGyver, Airwolf, and a bazillion other completely terrible shows seemed so wonderful. And they still are, as long as I don't take them too seriously and remember what made them good in the first place. Like you I may think a lot of shows today suck, but ask a 10-year-old and he/she might disagree. (Though I can name quite a few good shows in recent years too, like House, some Dr Who, Battlestar Galactica, Arrested Development, Scrubs, Futurama, some Law & Order...I could probably fill a screen with decent TV.)
