What features should KITT have in the movie?

Post by Victor Kros » Sat Jan 19, 2008 9:51 pm

I'm curious to find out what new features the Knight Rider community would like to see K.IT.T. have in the feature film. I really would like to know more then just the obvious ones you'd like him to have if possible, like turbo boost, oil slick, etc.

I'm basically trying to find out if people prefer the classic gimmicks of the original KITT features or if they prefer something more realistic and less a stretch of the imagination. In addition, I am also curious to hear what new features you might think KITT should or could have that we haven't seen before.

I don't think oil slick is really needed but I guess if there's a chase sequence and KITT can't just get away with speed it'd be useful, but the main "classics" are a must. I think a good mix of reality and "fantasy" would work just as long as it doesn't get silly, like things seemed to get when KITT used the "magical microwave jammer of wonder and mystery". :D No flying outside of turbo boost, maybe the amphibious aspect that was introduced in that one second (I think it was second) season episode and never used again until Knightmare 2000. It's tricky because KITT was able to do a lot of things, what couldn't the original KITT do? I don't think there's a need for a monitor/TV screen at all anymore and it might still work better than a holographic display as a replacement but then I can see how something that's actually there would probably be better. Maybe the windshield/windows could "change" to a screen or wait, KR2000 did that didn't it? Ugh... I need to laydown because it's a real pain in the backside to do this right now. I do know he inside should be more streamlined though.

Anyway, to go off topic (as if I already haven't), I was thinking last night that it might be good to show the work going into building the car including a little explanation or "science" behind certain aspects and abilities, such as turbo boost and a at least somewhat feasible explanation on KITT's turbine engine to go along with it. Maybe a few hints at a previous prototype that had to be deactivated.

Okay, I need sleep..... This post sucked. I should be fired or banned because of it.
The new and again improved evil's advertisement is currently too long and too badass to display here. But let's just say that with now 50% more evil, this **** is great! :skar:

Not sure if this really a good idea? (Considering the feelings of some folks towards SPM!), But I've always had a feeling that KITT would be intersting with Hydraulic suspension?...Not so he could hang with Low Riders or act like Herbie! :P , But just to give him some extra movment? (It could even somehow function with Turbo Boost?)

I'm new to this forum, and find it facinating. I'm wondering while reading this thread, if we are going to see a "new" KITT in the feature film, like the Mustang in the new TV movie, or are we going to see the Trans-Am KITT that we know fom the original series. If you look at the recent TV show to Movie remakes one thing is clear if the car was the star then they aren't going to change it. Starsky and Hutch had their red 70's model Torino and the Dukes Of Hazzard had their 69 Dodge Charger. Why would KITT be anything other than an 80's model Trans-AM? Just something I wanted to throw out there for discussion.

I reckon a decent HUD (Heads Up Display) for KITT is a must, plus it would also be cool if the computerised elements of the interior could be completely camoflaged at the touch of a button.

To be honest, depending on the overall tone taken by the new movie, I wouldn't mind if the fantastical leaping 50ft in the air aspect of Turbo Boost was dropped. Fair enough have it serve up a blast of extra speed, but I'd prefer to see any jumps executed using available terrain (loading ramps, slopes etc) in conjuntion with this more plausible function rather than just magically happening at the touch of a button a la the series.

Controversial, eh? Well get a load of this: the scanner should only be visible in surveillence, auto-cruise and pursuit modes. There, I said it!

In general though, I'm a firm believer that the more realism you can incorporate into a concept like Knight Rider, the easier it will be to sell the slightly more make-believe aspects to an audience.

What appealed to the audience about KITT in 1982? It was cutting edge tech right at Michael's fingertips. Not to mention the amazing AI and personality of KITT himself. Much of the gagetry of the original KITT is available to everyday drivers today. Phone calls, email, youtube, internet shopping, weather forecasts, GPS, I can have it all in my car. So electronic gimicks aren't going to have any flash at all. There simply won't be anything electronic you could put on the car that would be viewed at truly futuristic. I think what's left is going to be the performance, weapons, and indistructibility of the car as well as the KITT's personality.

Spend a little time going into KITT's backstory. Even if it's only 5 minutes of the film, why not explore how KITT's personality is developed. Surely he wasn't witty and wry the instant he was turned on. Does he have any developmental strugles? I'm not talking about turning this into an existential dilema like Data faces on Star Trek but this stuff is interesting.

maybe some kinds of weapons, cause these days all action movies have em. And something unique, something the original Knight 2000, 3000 and 4000 don't have. Maybe if possible a convertible top as well though I think thats highly unlikely. Ski mode as well if possible. A more human AI (KITT and Michael take awhile to get along). Silent mode (i alway liked that feature),tire spikes, a mix of touch screen and normal buttons, reinflatatable tires, remote control...lemme just click post before I ramble anymore on.

How about the ability to skip between one universe to another alternate universe by banging the console with a rubber mallet??? Wait... Wrong forum... Thought i was on the Doctor Who forum for a minute there. :D

Seriously though, it's very hard to think up new features for K.I.T.T. All i can think of at the moment is perhaps some weapons to help out in really sticky situations. I know someone already mentioned this but i'm thinking small scale stuff, not press a button and 4 chain guns, 10 rocket launchers and some grenades coming out from the wheels.

Oh, wait, how about this. Rather than the way K.I.T.T. used to be able to spy on conversations people were having (you know, through 6 walls, 3 doors etc), why not give him that laser device the feds use to spy on people. Could also have a sorta small drone for stealth spying from a long distance.

Not much to go on and probably no help at all but my head is hurting and is now gonna hurt all day thinking about this.

Hmmm...I'd want to see a mix of realistic and some stuff in the movie. What about seeing KITT parachute to the ground off a building and landing perfectly at a traffic light in the middle of a city! Okay...that's a little too far.
Hmmm...How about a coffee maker! Or spikes coming out of KITT's tires(if it hasn't been used in KR already).

When I was a kid I wasn't too impressed by electronic gadgets and flashing lights. What really caught my fantasy was the fact that the car was intelligent, capable of driving itself and helping michael as a living thing. In my opinion this feeling can be recreated in the years 2K too.

That's the first thing about KITT that would captivate anyone in the first place. :)

Any of KITT's features should only be used as a necessary part of the plot, not the other way around, like on the old show where it seemed as if they came up with deus ex machina abilities, just to get Michael and KITT out of a jam that bonnie conveniently installed into KITT at the beginning of the episode, etc. It's too contrived. It's a little bit cheesy, so I don't think anyone can come up with great ideas for new abilities for KITT since the original KITT had too many to count. KITT could practically do anything, and maybe that's the point. It keeps the mystique of the car.
Watching KITT turbo boost since 1982.
