The simple answer is: K.I.T.T.

Glen Larson created Knight Rider, and he created K.I.T.T. K.A.R.R. was created by Knight Rider producer and staff writer Steven E. de Souza, a few months after the show went on the air.

A funny bit of trivia -- in Glen Larson's first draft of the Knight Rider pilot script, K.I.T.T. was named T.A.T.T. (Trans Am Two Thousand). So the first car in Larson's mind was "T.A.T.T."! :)

I don't know if this is the same for other countries, but in the UK "tat" is slang for rubbish. So I don't think the show could ever have been taken seriously if K.I.T.T. was called that.

T.A.T.T doesn't exactly roll off the tongue as easily as K.I.T.T either. ;)

I always thought they were gonna use Corvettes. But looking at the shape of the T/A, Corvette and Datsun 280z, you can tell the kinda shape that was in Glen's mind.
