According to something I just read on IMDB, KITT was originally going to be a Datsun 280ZX, but GM came out with the 3rd gen Trans-Am not long before pre-production.

I found one (literally one) in a Target. It's not as good as the one they released in Japan, but its better than paying $80 on eBay. Sorry for the low quality pics, but all I had was my phone.
